Hi there! I'm Sherriza Hareani Jalil,a storyteller, who writes under the pen name Sherri Eri—easier for young readers and their parents to remember!

My love for picture books began in childhood, captivated by the magic of fairy tales and nursery rhymes. This passion for children’s stories, especially those that spark wonder, has only deepened over time.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Language from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1990, followed by a Master of Arts in English Language in 1997. My academic journey has significantly influenced my writing, equipping me with the skills to craft stories that resonate with children and adults alike.

Writing picture books is personal for me. As someone who is visually impaired, I understand the challenge of making stories accessible to all children, regardless of their ability to see the illustrations.

Ensuring the illustrations align with my words is crucial, and I rely on my sister’s help to make sure the images reflect the story I’m telling.

I’ve adapted my writing style for storytelling sessions by using verse and internal rhymes, which help me remember my stories. The beat and music act as auditory cues, ensuring my live narration syncs with the soundtrack and images displayed behind me—a task that can be quite nerve-wracking!

Another exciting challenge I’ve embraced is incorporating songs into the audio versions of my books. Sometimes I write the song after crafting the story, and other times the song comes first, inspiring the tale that follows. This adds a new dimension to my storytelling, making it even more immersive.

My books aren’t just about words—they’re about creating a vibrant, immersive experience. The candy-colored illustrations captivate sighted children, while the rhythmic, rhyming text and music keep everyone engaged.
