Meet Jibs: Singing Merprince to Life in “Mermaid on a Mountaintop”

Jibs' smoldering vocals shatter the myth that academics are unexciting.

As a marketing and public relations lecturer at a polytechnic in Singapore, he blends intellect with soul on stage and in the recording studio.

A portrait of Najib Ahmad (Jibs), the singing voice of the Merprince in ‘Mermaid on a Mountaintop.’ A marketing lecturer and long-time advocate for the visually impaired, Jibs’ soulful vocals bring the character to life, bridging the gap between music and inclusive storytelling for the ‘Once Upon a Sound’ series.

Despite a packed schedule, Jibs is committed to giving back. His volunteer efforts span from supporting cat adoption drives to organizing charity fundraisers. In fact, his passion for helping others led him to organize a concert in 2007 that raised funds for the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH).

Jibs continues his support for the visually impaired by lending his voice to Merprince in Sherri Eri's audiobook “Mermaid On A Mountaintop”. Through this role, he helps bring her inclusive stories to life for children, whether they have good, low, or no vision.

Sherri Eri is a Singapore-based children’s author and founder of Picture the Book. She writes inclusive picture books and audiobooks shaped by rhythm and carefully chosen words — so children can follow the story even if they can’t see the illustrations.
